Individual Counselling

A confidential, supportive space to explore difficulties such as Anxiety, Depression, stress, self-esteem, relationships, life changes and emotional wellbeing.

What to Expect from Individual Counselling

A safe, confidential space where you can talk, reflect and begin to make sense of things

Starting counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you've never experienced therapy before. You may wonder what you are supposed to talk about, whether you'll know what to say, or whether counselling will actually help.

There is no right or wrong way to begin.

My role is to provide a supportive, professional and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what you're experiencing. We work together to understand what is happening and identify what may help you move forward.

Your First Session

You don't need to prepare a speech or have everything organised beforehand. We can start wherever feels most comfortable for you.

The first session is also an opportunity for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.

Working Together

Counselling is a collaborative process.

Rather than simply being told what to do, you will have space to explore your own thoughts, feelings, experiences and choices

.

Together, we may look at:

Understanding what's happening

We can explore your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and consider how they may be connected.

Identifying patterns

Sometimes we can find ourselves repeating patterns without understanding why. Therapy can help you recognise these patterns and consider alternative ways of responding.

Developing coping strategies

We can identify practical strategies to help you manage difficult emotions, anxiety, stress or challenging situations.

Building self-awareness

Developing a better understanding of yourself can help you recognise your needs, triggers, strengths and emotional responses.

Strengthening self-esteem

We can explore negative self-beliefs, self-criticism and experiences that may have affected how you see yourself.

Developing healthier boundaries

You may find it difficult to say no, put your own needs first or communicate your limits. Counselling can provide space to explore these difficulties.

Improving communication

We can explore how you communicate your thoughts and needs and how relationship patterns may affect your wellbeing.

A Pace That Works for You

There is no requirement to talk about everything immediately.

Some experiences can take time to discuss, particularly if they are painful, sensitive or difficult to understand.

We can work at a pace that feels manageable, while still working towards the goals you want to achieve.

You remain an active part of the process throughout.

Confidentiality

Counselling provides a confidential space where you can talk about your experiences openly.

At the beginning of therapy, I will explain confidentiality and its professional limits so that you understand how your information is handled and what you can expect from the therapeutic relationship.

The Goal of Counselling

Ultimately, counselling is about helping you develop a greater understanding of yourself and your experiences, while building the confidence and skills to manage life's challenges.

You may finish therapy with:

  • Greater self-awareness

  • Improved emotional understanding

  • More effective coping strategies

  • Healthier boundaries

  • Greater self-confidence

  • Improved communication

  • A clearer understanding of your needs

  • Greater awareness of your strengths

  • Practical tools to support your ongoing wellbeing

  •

You don't have to know exactly where to start.

We can start with where you are now and work from there.

Couples Therapy

Support for couples experiencing communication difficulties, conflict, disconnection, trust issues or challenges within their relationship.

What to Expect from Couples Therapy

A safe space to understand each other, improve communication and work towards a healthier relationship

Every relationship goes through difficult periods. Sometimes couples become stuck in repeated arguments, struggle to communicate, feel emotionally disconnected or find that unresolved issues continue to affect their relationship.

Couples therapy provides a confidential and supportive environment where both partners can explore what is happening within the relationship and begin to understand each other's experiences.

You don't have to wait until your relationship reaches crisis point to seek support.

Your First Couples Session

The first session is an opportunity for us to understand your relationship and what has brought you to therapy.

We may explore:

  • What has led you to seek couples therapy

  • The difficulties you are currently experiencing

  • How you communicate with one another

  • Patterns of conflict or disagreement

  • How you each experience the relationship

  • What is working well

  • What you would like to change

  • What you both hope to achieve through therapy

  •

Both partners will have an opportunity to be heard.

The aim is not to decide who is right or wrong, but to begin understanding what is happening between you.

Understanding Your Relationship Patterns

One of the most useful aspects of couples therapy can be recognising patterns that develop within a relationship.

Therapy can help you explore:

  • How you express your needs

  • How you listen to one another

  • How emotions influence conversations

  • How disagreements escalate

  • How to communicate concerns without blame

  • How to express feelings more clearly

  • How to listen without immediately becoming defensive

  • How to have difficult conversations more constructively

  •

The goal isn't to eliminate disagreement. Healthy relationships can still have differences of opinion.

The aim is to develop healthier ways of navigating those differences.

Managing Conflict

Arguments can become repetitive:

“We always end up having the same argument.”

Couples therapy can help you identify what sits underneath recurring disagreements.

Sometimes an argument about household responsibilities, money or communication may also involve deeper feelings about:

  • Feeling valued

  • Feeling appreciated

  • Feeling heard

  • Feeling secure

  • Feeling respected

  • Feeling important

  • Feeling connected

  •

Understanding these underlying needs can help couples move beyond the immediate argument.

Rebuilding Emotional Connection.

Relationships can sometimes become focused on practical responsibilities:

Work. Children. Money. Household tasks. Family commitments.

Over time, couples may feel more like a team managing life than partners who are emotionally connected.

Therapy can provide space to explore:

  • Emotional closeness

  • Affection

  • Feeling valued

  • Quality time

  • Emotional needs

  • Intimacy

  • Connection and companionship

Trust & Relationship Difficulties

Trust can be affected by many different experiences.

Therapy can provide a structured environment to explore the impact of experiences such as:

  • Broken agreements

  • Secrecy

  • Repeated conflict

  • Emotional distance

  • Changes in the relationship

  • Previous relationship experiences

  •

Where appropriate, therapy can help couples explore what would be needed to rebuild communication, understanding and trust.

Boundaries & Individual Needs

Being in a relationship doesn't mean losing your individual identity.

Healthy relationships require space for both people's needs, values and boundaries.

My role isn't to take sides or decide who is right.

I provide a structured environment where both partners can be heard.

There may be times when you see things very differently. That's okay.

The therapeutic process can help you understand those differences and consider how you want to respond to them.

The Aim of Couples Therapy

The goal isn't necessarily to create a relationship without disagreements.

Instead, therapy can help you develop a relationship where you are better able to:

  • Communicate openly

  • Understand one another

  • Manage disagreements

  • Express your needs

  • Respect boundaries

  • Recognise relationship patterns

  • Rebuild connection

  • Develop greater emotional awareness

  • Make informed decisions about your relationship

  •

Sometimes the first step towards improving a relationship is simply creating a safe space to talk about what isn't working.

I just wanted to share how I’m feeling and how well I think things are going. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect at first, but looking back at where I started, I can’t believe how far I’ve come.

I feel calmer, more grounded, and more sure of myself. I understand myself better, I’m finding it easier to talk about things instead of keeping them in, and I’m starting to feel more like me again. I’m more able to cope with things that used to feel impossible and that means so much.

Thank you for listening, for being patient, and for creating such a safe space. You’ve helped me untangle so much, given me tools I can actually use, and helped me see things differently. It hasn’t always been easy, but every session has mattered.

I’m really proud of the progress we’ve made. I’m doing the work, I can see it paying off, and I feel stronger for it and I know your guidance has made all the difference. I couldn’t have done it without your support.

Jo has been a complete joy to work with, learn with and grow with. After two-plus years with her, I'm a genuinely better version of myself. She's helped me through difficult friendships, work situations, stress, anxiety and depression, and was a trusted guide when I chose to try antidepressants. I'm a happier, more balanced person now, and I understand myself and the people around me so much better than I did.

A lot of my happiness, and a lot of the way I try to be a good person and treat others, I owe to the work we've done together. Jo gives you space and calm, but she's also properly human and funny with it, which is a rare combination. I can't recommend her enough.

Jo is warm and easy to talk to, she creates a trusting environment where I feel I can be open and share anything I need to. My sessions with Jo have helped me to better understand my emotions and she suggests useful strategies to try outside of my sessions. She has helped me feel empowered and more connected to who I am

"Jo has been patient and supportive. Helped me navigate a difficult period with clarity and kindness. Am able to see progress in my wellbeing."
